PARIS, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday announced the contract extension of Marquinhos for another three years, binding the Brazilian defender at the Parc des Princes until 2022.

"Paris Saint-Germain are delighted to announce Marquinhos has signed a three-year contract extension. The Brazil international is now tied to the capital club until 30 June 2022," the club said in a statement on their official website.

Coming through the youth academy at Corinthians in Brazil, Marquinhos joined PSG from Roma in 2013. The 23-year-old defender has played 161 competitive games for PSG, scoring a total of 13 goals.

Marquinhos won three Ligue 1, four French League Cup, three French Cup and two French Super Cup titles. In 2016, he claimed the Olympic gold medal in Rio, and capped 19 times for the Brazilian national team.

"I have always said I'm happy to play for Paris Saint-Germain, and this contract extension is further proof of my commitment to the club," said Marquinhos after signing a new contract.

"I have found here the perfect place to flourish and hope to win many more trophies. Over the last four years, I have been able to guage the progress made at Paris Saint-Germain, which has notably enabled me to get into the national team," he added.

Marquinhos became the latest PSG player who renewed the deal after Edinson Cavani, Thiago Silva and Presnel Kimpembe as the team aimed at consolidating the core of the squad after falling short to Monaco in last season's Ligue 1, bringing their four-year dominance in French top-flight league to an end.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, CEO and Chairman of Paris Saint-Germain, expressed his "great satisfaction" towards Marquinhos' contract extension.

"In four years, he has continually grown in our team and we have seen him become, little by little, one of the best defenders in the world, even though he is still very young," said Al-Khelaifi.

"Marquinhos deeply believes in Paris Saint-Germain's ability to satisfy his ambitions and take him to the summit of international football," added the PSG Chairman.
