体坛英语新闻:Record-breaking Monaco Run kick-starts weekend of sport ahead of Laureus World Sports Awards
MONACO, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Monaco celebrated with three events over 24 hours away from the Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony.
The Monaco Run, supported by Laureus, began on Sunday with thousands of children and young people taking part in the Laureus Sport for Good run, over a distance of 1km. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the work of Laureus Sport for Good, which transforms young lives all over the world.
The main event was the elite 5km run, with a strong field of runners in both the men and women's races.
The men's race was won by Julien Wanders in record time of 13:29, while Sifan Hassan won the women's race in record time of 14:44. Both record are pending IAAF ratification.
The Monaco Run was completed with a 10km trail run through Monaco.
"It has been a classic Monte Carlo weekend, the sun has been shining and it's been great to see everyone out supporting the runs and getting behind the Laureus World Sports Awards," said Laureus World Sports Academy Chairman Sean Fitzpatrick.
The Monaco Run, organized by the Monaco Athletics Federation (FMA), was the curtain-raiser to the Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday.
Monday's 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco honor the greatest and most inspirational sports triumphs of the past calendar year.
