体坛英语新闻:Matchday 37 in Spain leaves lots to be decided in final round

MADRID, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The penultimate round of matches in the Liga Santander leaves the questions of who will qualify for next season's Champions and Europa League to be decided in the final weekend, while (barring a miracle) Girona will be relegated to the second division Liga 123.

FC Barcelona were greeted with boos as they took to the pitch for their home game against Getafe after last week's shock 4-0 defeat away to Liverpool in the Champions League. Leo Messi led the way with the pass fro Arturo Vidal's opening goal in a 2-0 win over the team that had kicked off the weekend in fourth place.

Getafe's defeat allowed Valencia to move into fourth after a 3-1 win at home to Alaves, and Marcelino Garcia's side will play in next season's Champions League if they can win away to Valladolid next weekend.

Alaves took the lead in Mestalla through Ximo Navarro's 12th minute goal, but the home side hit back with goals from Carles Soler and Santi Mina, before Kevin Gameiro assured the win with 22 minutes remaining.

Pablo Sarabia's 70th minute goal gave Sevilla a 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid and means they also have an outside chance of finishing fourth. Koke had opened the scoring for Atletico, but Sarabia's goal saw the points shared.

Athletic Club Bilbao remain seventh and will qualify for next season's Europa League if they avoid defeat against Sevilla next season.

Two first half goals from Raul Garcia and one from Inaki Williams set Athletic on their way to a 3-1 win over Celta, who got on the scoresheet thanks to a late penalty from Iago Aspas.

Borja Iglesias scored twice, the first after an excellent assist from Wu Lei, as Espanyol won 2-0 away to Leganes and the Barcelona based club maintain their options of finishing seventh if they beat Real Sociedad next weekend and Athletic lose.

Real Sociedad meanwhile need to beat Espanyol after a 3-1 win at home to Real Madrid left them eighth in the table.

Brahim Diaz scored his first goal for Real Madrid to put the visitors ahead in the sixth minute but Zinedine Zidane's side produced another poor performance and Real Sociedad equalized through Mikel Merino 20 minutes later.

Jesus Vallejo was sent off for a straight red card in the 39th minute to leave Real Madrid with 10 men before Igor Zubeldia headed Real Sociedad ahead in the 57th minute and 17-year-old Ander Barrenetxea secured the win 10 minutes later.

There was high drama in the battle to avoid relegation where Girona look almost certain to go down after their 2-1 defeat to Levante.

Cristhian Stuani put Girona ahead in the 60th minute, but Jose Luis Morales drew Levante level two minutes later and Enis Bardhi gave the visitors three points that keep them up four minutes from time.

Valladolid are also safe after a 2-1 win away to Rayo Vallecano, thanks to goals from Enis Unal and Sergi Guardiola, while Toko Ekambi's second half goal saw Villarreal also assure their survival with a 1-0 win at home to Eibar.

The only way Girona can survive now is if they win away to Alaves in the last game of the season and Celta lose at home to Rayo Vallecano, but Celta's superior goal difference means Girona have to win by at least 5 goals.
