体坛英语新闻:China win one gold, one silver at World Rowing Championships
LINZ-OTTENSHEIM, Austria, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- China took one gold and one silver at the 2019 World Rowing Championships here on Friday.
In the Lightweight Men's Quadruple Sculls (LM4x) competition, the Chinese team began to take the lead after 200 meters gone and held advantage until the end. The field remained tight with the race for silver and Italy finally got the second, followed by the Netherlands.
"We are extremely excited about this gold! All the effort is worthwhile. We've expected for a gold for a long time but we lost to the Netherlands twice before. Now we finally achieve it," said Chinese rower Zhang Zhiyuan.
The silver medal for China came from the Lightweight Women's Quadruple Sculls (LW4x) competition.
This was the last chance to win medals today and Italy clinched the gold.
But the margins remained tight, with China getting a slight edge to be the closest to Italy. Germany won the bronze.
"We've reached our limits in this race. We could've done a little bit better in the last 500 meters, but we are satisfied with this result," said Chinese rower Chen Fang.
The 2019 World Rowing Championships started on August 25 and will end on September 1. As of Friday, Italy led the medal table with 3 golds, 3 silvers and one bronze, followed by the United States 2-0-1 and Australia 1-1-1. China was the fifth.
