体坛英语新闻:Preview: Mourinho's return the big news in Premier League weekend

2019-12-30来源:Xinhuanet

LONDON, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Tottenham fans won't have to wait long to see how their new coach, Jose Mourinho looks to turn things around at the club as Spurs play local rivals West Ham United on Saturday lunchtime.

Fate has decreed that Mourinho will make his debut after being named as the replacement for Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane, against the side coached by Manuel Pellegrini, the man he replaced as coach at Real Madrid a decade ago.

Spurs make the short trip to the London Stadium 14th in the table, while West Ham are two places below them in 16th following a disastrous run of four defeats in five games, provoking rumors that Pellegrini's job is under threat.

However, there is no doubt who the cameras will be focussing on this Saturday as Mourinho looks to put some bite into Spurs and forget his painful departure from Manchester United last November.

The second big game of the day sees Manchester City, who slipped down to fourth in the table following their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool a fortnight ago, at home to Chelsea.

Pep Guardiola's side need a win to leapfrog the visitors and also to help calm talk of crisis after their defeat before the international break and the game is likely to be an interesting litmus test of how Frank Lampard's young side have matured in the first half of the campaign.

Arsenal coach Unai Emery is another boss under pressure and there is a chance the Spaniard could go the same way as Pochettino if his side fails to beat second from bottom Southampton, whose coach Ralph Hassenhuttl is also feeling the heat after a run of five defeats in six games.

Emery is rumoured to be considering bringing Granit Xhaka back into the side after stripping him of the captaincy following an incident when he gestured and swore at fans in the Emirates Stadium after being substituted in a recent home game against Crystal Palace.

Palace are the next rivals for League leaders Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp's men will be without striker Mohamed Salah and left back Andy Robertson after the pair suffered ankle injuries during the international break.

Second place Leicester City look to build on their impressive run of four consecutive wins when they travel to the south coast to face Brighton, who have climbed up to 11th in the table after winning two of their last three matches.

The weekend's remaining fixtures see what should be an evenly matched game between ninth place Bournemouth and Wolves, who have put a poor start to the season behind them to climb up to eighth with an impressive run of results.

Norwich's form recently has been anything but impressive with five defeats from their last six games seeing them slide to the bottom of the table. Norwich visit Everton, whose performances have been nothing to shout about either, but Marco Silva's side will expect three points that could carry them into the top half.

Watford won in Norwich before the break to claim their first win of the season and a home win against Burnley would confirm their recent improvement under Quique Sanchez Flores and lift them level on points with Aston Villa who entertain an improving Newcastle United on Monday.

The game should be special for Newcastle coach Steve Bruce, who was sacked by Villa before moving to Tyneside.

Sunday has only one game, but it promises to be fascinating as newly promoted Sheffield United entertain Manchester United.

Sheffield have impressed hugely in their climb up to fifth, while the jury is very much still out on United, despite striker Marcos Rashford insisting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the right man to replace Jose Mourinho a year ago.... Mourinho's return to the dugout this weekend will help everyone see if that is the case.
