体坛英语新闻:Freiburg lose 1-0 to Leverkusen in Bundesliga
BERLIN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Kai Havertz's goal was enough to snatch all three points for Bayer Leverkusen at Freiburg following the 29th round of Bundesliga matches on Friday.
The 20-year-old German international made Bundesliga history after becoming the first player to score 35 goals before turning 21.
Leverkusen began powerfully and dominated possession, whereas Freiburg kept all their men behind the ball to focus on a well-positioned defense.
The visitors controled proceedings but were unable to pose danger in front of goal as Christian Streich's men neutralized every promising attempt.
Although Leverkusen were the more active team, it was the hosts who worked the first clear-cut opportunity of the match through Lucas Holer, who missed the target with only the goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky to beat just before the break.
After the restart, Leverkusen turned up and got rewarded with the opener in the 55th minute when Havertz traded passes with Leon Bailey inside the box to nutmeg Freiburg custodian Alexander Schwolow from tight angle.
Moments later, Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz almost doubled the advantage but the youngster pulled just wide.
At the hour mark, the "Werkself" thought they had extended the lead but Julian Baumgartlinger's header got disallowed due to a foregone foul play.
Peter Bosz's men then retreated with their narrow lead and let Freiburg do the work. The hosts, however, were unable to turn their chances into a tangible reward as Hradecky saved Nils Petersen's harmless shot from a promising position with two minutes remaining.
With the victory, Bayer Leverkusen move into third place, while Freiburg suffered their 11th defeat of the season to remain eighth in the Bundesliga standings.
Saturday's matches see struggling Schalke host relegation-threatened Werder Bremen, Wolfsburg take on Eintracht Frankfurt, Hertha Berlin face Augsburg, Mainz clash with Hoffenheim and leaders Bayern Munich encounter Fortuna Dusseldorf.
