LONDON, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Saturday unveiled five key general election pledges, including securing the economic recovery and raising living standards in Britain

According to Brown, the other three priorities of the Labour Party are to build a hi-tech economy, to protect frontline investment in policing, childcare and the NHS and to strengthen fairness in communities.

"We have big plans for this country and we intend to see them through," Brown told party activists in Nottingham. "We, the Labour Party, have never believed that difficult times should mean diminished dreams."

Brown emphasized that as the Labour is the "people's party," he will put the British people first ahead of "vested interests."

"It is a choice about whether we want to continue on the road to economic recovery or want to turn off, whether we believe that we can face the biggest challenges with the strength of a community around us, or whether every individual should simply be left to sink or swim," he said.

The UK opposition parties claimed that the pledges were meaningless after years of "failures". The conservatives said Brown was not being honest about the challenges the UK faced while the Liberal Democrats said pledges would not make people forget Labour's shortcomings.
