国际英语新闻:Former Greek FM paves way for new political party
Daughter of a former prime minister in the country, Bakogiannis unsuccessfully vied for the leadership for the main opposition New Democracy party after last October's general election.
According to Greek media reports, this autumn Bakogiannis will become the leader of a new center-right political party. According to a recent opinion poll, she could get 9.1 percent of the votes if elections were held today, while New Democracy would get 12.7 percent.
Greece holds local elections this autumn. Despite strong denials by government ministers, Greek media insist that Prime Minister George Papandreou might resort to general elections, just one year after PASOK's win, seeking people's approval of his policy, which has been different from last year's pre-election pledges since the crisis broke out last December.
According to another poll released on Sunday by a Greek newspaper, PASOK would still win the elections by 43 percent, despite the unpopular austerity measures introduced this year to overcome the crisis.
