CAIRO, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Two were killed and 16 others injured in clashes in Damietta and Alexandria governorates of Egypt, official news agency MENA reported on Friday.

One supporter of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood was killed and nine others injured in Kafr el-Batikh Village in Delta city of Damietta on Friday, when local residents tried to stop one of the Brotherhood demonstrations from passing through their village.

Meanwhile, another one was killed and seven injured in limited clashes near Qaed Ibrahim Mosque in the coastal city of Alexandria, as supporters and opponents of the Brotherhood threw stones at each other.

After Friday prayers, Muslim Brotherhood supporters staged rallies in different parts of Egypt in protest of what they described as a "military coup" that ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

The demonstrators chanted anti-police slogans and held yellow sheets with four fingers, which became a symbol of Rabaa-el- Adaweya sit-in that was dispersed on Aug. 14.

A pro-Morsi bloc, "the National Alliance for Supporting Legitimacy," called for such protests in the hope of reinstating their Islamic leader.

More than 3,500 Brotherhood members, including top leaders, were detained since July 3 when Morsi was ousted by the armed forces. Morsi has been referred to the criminal court with 14 other Brotherhood leaders over inciting violence and murder.

The protests came a day after Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim survived a bomb attack targeting his convoy, during which one recruit was injured and died Friday, and 24 others were injured, said the health ministry.
