国际英语新闻:U.S. condemns terrorist attacks in Kenya
WASHINGTON, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The United States condemns " despicable" terrorist attacks in Nairobi, capital of Kenya, that have killed at least 10 people and left 70 others injured, the White House said Friday.
Nairobi police commander Benson Kibue said they are holding one suspect in connection with the twin blasts, one of which hit a 14- seater passenger vehicle while the other occurred inside the Gikomba market, Nairobi's biggest open-air market.
"This is the latest in a series of cowardly attacks on innocent civilians in Kenya, from the capital to the coast," National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.
She also offered thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones of the victims.
Friday's attacks came after Western countries issued travel advisories this week, warning their citizens against visiting Kenya due to increased terror attacks in the East African nation. More than 100 people have been killed and hundreds more injured in the attacks, with half of them occurring in northeastern Kenya.
For half a century, United States stands with its Kenyan friends and partners who continue to face adversity with courage and resolve, Hayden said.
"We support them in their efforts to confront terrorism in all of its forms," she added.
