国际英语新闻:UN mission in South Sudan wraps up destruction of weapons found in displaced camps

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Tuesday said it had destroyed a batch of weapons and ammunition confiscated from displaced people sheltering at its protection sites in the country.

The destruction exercise, the last one in a series of similar activities, was conducted at UNMISS's compound outside the Jonglei State capital of Bor Monday, according to the UN source.

More than 100 rounds of ammunition confiscated from internally displaced persons (IDPs) sheltering at the Mission's Bor protection site were destroyed, along with some machetes and military uniforms.

This is the last in a series of weapons and ammunition destruction activities that began in Juba on Dec. 9. Similar weapons and ammunition destruction exercises had also taken place in Malakal in Upper Nile State, in Wau in Western Bahr el Ghazal State and in Bentiu in Unity State.

Political in-fighting between President Salva Kiir and his former deputy, Riek Machar, started nearly a year ago and subsequently turned into a full-fledged conflict that has sent nearly 100,000 civilians fleeing to UNMISS bases around the country. The crisis has uprooted some 1.5 million people and placed more than seven million at risk of hunger and disease.

The UNMISS was established by the Security council on July 9, 2011, the day when South Sudan became an independent country after decades of civil war between the north and south of Sudan, which ended in 2005 with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
