国际英语新闻:Palestine, ahead of UN chief's visit, urges int'l protection
RAMALLAH, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian officials said Tuesday that they will urge United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to respond to Palestinian request for international protection.
Majdi al-Khaldi, the diplomatic adviser to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, told Xinhua that the Palestinians want Ban to take the request to the UN Security Council to stop what he described as "Israeli crimes and violations."
Ban arrived in Israel earlier Tuesday. He is expected to meet with Israeli leaders Tuesday afternoon and with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Wednesday to discuss the security situation with the Israeli and Palestinian leadership.
The latest round of unrest between the Palestinians and Israelis has left 46 Palestinians and eight Israelis dead since early October.
The wave of violence started amid strife over a holy Jerusalem site in September, but spread to the West Bank, Gaza Strip and across Israel, amid dim prospects to renew peace talks.
