国际英语新闻:Namibia to eliminate bucket toilet system in 2017
WINDHOEK, April 24 (Xinhua) -- The use of bucket toilets in Namibia will be a thing of the past by the end of 2017, Namibian Minister of Urban and Rural Development Sophia Shaningwa said Monday.
Shaningwa made the remarks while addressed a strategic planning workshop in Windhoek.
More than 2,000 households in the urban and peri-urban areas, Shaningwa said, are still using the bucket toilet system.
Describing the bucket toilet system as unhygienic, Shaningwa said she would ensure that the system will be removed by end of the year.
Shaningwa said the government will target households that are close to reticulation systems because of the current financial problems.
The construction of proper waterborne toilets, and to connect them to the main sewer line will be other part of the work, Shaningwa said.
Namibian President Hage Geingob has targeted to build 50,000 pit latrines as part of the Harambee Prosperity Plan until 2020.
