国际英语新闻:Brazilian President Temer preparing to fight off upcoming charges
RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's President Michel Temer is planning how to defend himself against obstruction of justice charges being prepared by prosecutor-general Rodrigo Janot.
According to Brazil's Globo TV station on Tuesday, Temer had a dinner with his defense team and with Supreme Court Justice Gilmar Mendes on Sunday, which did not appear on the president's official agenda.
Media reports state that Temer will try to affect Janot's standing, accusing him of "political persecution." The president is also allegedly intent on keeping his name out of the case investigating the leadership of his party, the Brazilian Democracy Movement Party (PMDB), for corruption.
Temer's defense team has already asked the Supreme Court to not include Temer in this investigation.
According to Globo, Temer will intensify his campaign against Janot. The president already survived corruption charges against him after the Chamber of Deputies voted to exonerate him last Wednesday, with the opposition not reaching the two-thirds majority needed to bring Temer to trial.
Janot charged Temer for passive corruption, after executives from meat conglomerate, JBS, admitted to paying bribes to Temer since 2010 and turned over a tape in which the president appeared to approve the bribery of public officials.
Allied deputies and senators are also expected to speak out, attacking Janot for "persecuting" the president and of trying to rush the legal process before his mandate as prosecutor-general ends in September.
