国际英语新闻:Aid delivery through Sudan to S. Sudan extended for 6 months
KHARTOUM, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Sudan and South Sudan on Wednesday agreed on extending humanitarian assistance to the needy in South Sudan through Sudanese territories, said Sudan's Humanitarian Aid Commissioner.
The humanitarian assistance, which was conducted by the UN through the World Food Programme (WFP), is renewed, as the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the issued is extended for six months, said Ahmed Mohamed Adam in a statement.
He said arrangements are ongoing to transport 65,000 tons of food through a number of corridors which Sudan agreed to open to deliver humanitarian assistance to South Sudan to enhance the humanitarian situation there.
The WFP is planning to send 30,000 metric tons of life-saving assistance in 2018 through Sudan to feed around 1.7 million people in South Sudan for 10 months.
The WFP could now reach three sites in South Sudan by land from Sudan including through Renk, Bentiu and Aweil towns.
In 2014, Juba and Khartoum signed a memorandum tasking the WFP with transporting the shipments of humanitarian aid from Sudan to the needy in South Sudan.
Millions of South Sudanese are facing the threat of famine due to the civil war which has erupted in the new-born state since December 2013.
