国际英语新闻:Rwanda issues over 200 indictments against genocide fugitives in 2017
KIGALI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The National Public Prosecution Authority of Rwanda (NPPA) in 2017 issued 218 indictments against fugitives of the 1994 genocide, Prosecutor General Jean Bosco Mutangana said on Monday.
These people are living in 14 countries in Europe and Africa, said Mutangana at a press conference in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda.
Over 1,000 indictments have been issued over the past 10 years, according to him.
He decried the reluctance of some countries in returning Rwandan genocide suspects to face justice.
He called on countries to put in more effort to ensure the fugitives responsible for genocide are either extradited to Rwanda or tried in those countries to avoid impunity.
The fugitives who are living in the region are said being hidden in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda and Kenya, according to the prosecutor.
The 1994 genocide claimed about 1 million lives, mainly ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus, in a period of 100 days.
