国际英语新闻:Sudan's military council urges opposition to facilitate power transition

KHARTOUM, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Deputy Chairman of Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) Mohamed Hamdan Daqlu on Wednesday urged the major opposition forces to overcome differences and facilitate transition of power to civilian authority.

"The TMC is committed to handing over power to the civilians if the two sides reached an agreement over the outstanding issues during the ongoing talks," said Daqlu.

He criticized the major opposition forces for refusing to hand the chairmanship of the sovereignty council to the military.

Sudan is passing through a dangerous junction that necessitates all parties to live up to their responsibilities toward the country, Daqlu noted.

The TMC and the opposition Freedom and Change Alliance recently agreed on powers of the sovereignty council, the council of ministers and the legislative council.

They agreed that the transitional period would be three years, with the first six months assigned for achieving peace all over Sudan.

In addition, the legislative council will be composed of 300 members, 67 percent of whom are from the Freedom and Change Alliance and the rest from the other political forces.

However, they have yet to reach an agreement on the representation of the military and the civilians in the transitional sovereignty council as well as the chairmanship of the council.

The TMC is tasked with running Sudan's affairs following the ouster of former President Omar al-Bashir.
