CAIRO, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Arab Parliament speaker urged on Sunday the United States to remove Sudan from its list of countries "sponsoring terrorism."

Arab Parliament Speaker Mishaal bin Fahm Al-Salami made the request in letters sent to U.S. Vice President and President of the Senate Mike Pence, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, according to a statement of the parliament.

Al-Salami told the U.S. officials in his letters about the resolution that the Arab Parliament unanimously adopted on Oct. 31 to require the removal of Sudan from this U.S. list.

The Arab Parliament's resolution was based on Sudan's efforts in combating terrorism and sponsoring peace as well as the implementation of all its commitments in the plan agreed with the United States to fight terrorism and promote human rights, the statement said.

Sudan was added to the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism in 1993 during the rule of former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir who was ousted by the military in April amid popular protests that erupted in December last year.

A ban on arms-related exports and sales, prohibitions on economic assistance, imposition of miscellaneous financial and other restrictions including loans from the World Bank and other international financial institutions are among the sanctions which the United States imposes on countries on the list.
