NEW DELHI, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Indian police arrested a 33-year-old man for setting a train coach on fire in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, officials said Friday.

The man set ablaze a coach of Rishikesh-Delhi passenger train and tore its seats on Thursday in Haridwar district, about 54 km south of Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand.

"We arrested a man here from Majpa village who torched a coach of a train and tore its seats," said Manoj Kumar Katyal, a senior police official with railways in Haridwar said.

"The man indulged in arson after feeling disillusioned for the road transport office denied him a driving license and bank officials were demanding him the original identity card which he was unable to get from the government office."

The passenger train was halted at the station when the person tore its seats and sprinkled petrol inside it to set it ablaze.

Police said the timely action from the police and firefighters helped in containing the fire and prevented it from spreading to other coaches.

The man was arrested after checking the CCTV footage of the spot.

Katyal said police have registered a case against the person and ordered an investigation to check his track record.

"We are conducting further investigation to see if he has any criminal records," Katyal said.

India's sprawling railway is the world's third-largest network, ferrying around 23 million people each day.
