国际英语新闻:Protest erupts in Lebanon following reports about poverty-related suicide cases
BEIRUT, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese protesters launched a big demonstration on Wednesday in the capital Beirut after news reports about people committing suicide in Lebanon due to their poor living conditions, local TV channel LDC reported.
Protesters chanted slogans against the current political ruling class while asking politicians to leave in a bid to give an opportunity for skilled people to come to power and implement reforms to save the deteriorating economy.
Local news agencies reported on Wednesday that a member of Lebanon's internal forces committed suicide and another citizen shot himself, adding that investigations are ongoing to specify reasons behind their suicide.
The National News Agency also reported on Wednesday that a taxi driver tried to throw himself from a building because he is incapable of paying back his debts. But people in the area stopped him from killing himself.
On Sunday, a man in Arsal, Bekaa ended his life after reportedly not being able to afford to give his daughter 1,000 Lebanon pounds (about 0.66 U.S. dollars).
Lebanon has been witnessing nationwide protests since Oct. 17 against the current political ruling class.
