国际英语新闻:DNC chair calls for recanvass of Iowa caucus results

WASHINGTON, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), on Thursday called for a recanvass of the party's Iowa caucus results delayed by a technical issue.

Perez, in a tweet, said that he's calling on the Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) to "immediately begin a recanvass" in light of "the problems that have emerged in the implementation of the delegate selection plan and in order to assure public confidence in the results."

The proposed recanvass, according to the chairman, is "a review of the worksheets from each caucus site to ensure accuracy."

The IDP will continue to report results, he said.

A "coding issue" in a mobile application used to collect data for the Iowa Democratic caucuses, held on Monday night, has caused a delay in announcing the full results.

With 97 percent of Iowa's precincts reporting, Pete Buttigieg, former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is leading with 26.2 percent of state delegates, closely followed by Senator Bernie Sanders, with 26.1 percent.

Senator Elizabeth Warren and former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden round out the top four with 18.2 percent and 15.8 percent, respectively, while Senator Amy Klobuchar, garnering 12.2 percent, takes the fifth place.

No other candidates received double-digit support.

Iowa also held Republican caucuses Monday night, in which sitting President Donald Trump easily won, as he was facing no significant challenge.

The Iowa caucuses were the first-in-the-nation nominating contests.

As the nation continues to await the full Iowa Democratic caucus results, the 2020 presidential race has already shifted to Northeastern state of New Hampshire, with a still crowded field of Democrats blanketing the state ahead of its Tuesday primary.

Trump will also go on the campaign trail next week. He's scheduled to attend a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Monday.
