国际英语新闻:AU leader calls for multilateralism in global governance
UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki on Thursday called for the renaissance of multilateralism in the world's pursuit of better global governance.
"This (COVID-19) pandemic has made it abundantly and painfully clear that humankind is one indivisible family. It has shown that unilateralism is on a hiding to nothing," he told a summit-level debate of the Security Council on global governance after COVID-19.
The pandemic has also thrown into stark relief the roadblocks that stand in the way of fully effective multilateralism and the artificial borders that have been erected between different members of the human family, said Faki.
"Africa calls on all of us to show our determination and to pull together our intelligence in our response in order to ensure a renaissance of multilateralism, which stands on our common values," he said.
"The experience we are currently undergoing has shown that the people of the world are hungry for effective global governance that can really deliver for them," Faki said.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has been a model of how to combat this global pandemic, he said. "And I congratulate them for their front-line role, a front-line role that they play not just in the global response to the pandemic, but also in their efforts to try and provide for a COVID-19 vaccine and to support the research toward that vaccine. We should stand full square behind the WHO's efforts and all efforts toward a vaccine."
