国际英语新闻:COVID-19 vaccine to put "end to pandemic nightmare," says Argentine president
BUENOS AIRES, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Alberto Fernandez on Tuesday said a vaccine against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) would put an "end to the pandemic nightmare."
"We are fighting against an invisible enemy that ... attacks us, sickens us and kills some of us," said Fernandez during a public ceremony in Avellaneda, a town south of Greater Buenos Aires.
"The only thing that matters to us is putting an end to the pandemic nightmare," said the president, adding Argentina would be receiving the Sputnik V vaccine being developed by Russia between December and January.
In a statement released by his office, Fernandez said who makes the vaccine is not an issue.
"We're not asking anyone what ideology the vaccine has. What we're asking is whether it saves the lives of Argentinians. And if it saves the lives of Argentinians, we go and we buy it, and inject it into Argentinians to save lives," Fernandez said.
Argentina reported its first case of COVID-19 on March 3 and has, as of Monday night, registered 1,183,131 cases of infection and 31,623 deaths from the disease.
