It's end of November already and Christmas is drawing near. The music industry benefits hugely from this time of year. But with album and single sales suffering, classical music seems to be the only genre bucking the trend certainly in the UK.

" The Priests " are one of the most popular classical bands in Britain. Their latest release, "Harmony", is just in time for the Christmas sales rush. Father Eugene O'Hagan says that classical music is the perfect match for the Christmas spirit.

" Classical music, which we have included in large measure on our second album, I suppose captures the mystery and the excitement that goes along with Christmas. "

The most important season for the music industry, the run-up to Christmas accounts for forty percent of annual sales. Those are important figures, as album sales in general have been down over recent years. But classical music is the clear sales winner. Unlike pop and rock music, classical music has suffered less from illegal downloading. Fans pay for their music, making the genre worth 40 million pounds to the industry.

But composer Karl Jenkins criticizes the classical Christmas releases for not being innovative enough. They may not be original, but that's all right. At this time of year, people embrace the traditional.
