Over the past few years China has completed more and more high speed railways. Trains have taken growing numbers of passengers away from flying and competition between the rail and airline industry is intense.
With Wuhan on its way to being a hi-speed railway hub, more and more flights from there to some nearby cities including Nanjing have been cancelled due to the construction of hi speed rail routes. Passenger volume during the Spring Festival suffered its first decline in 23 years. Airlines are expected to lose more share of their market to railways with the opening of the Beijing-Shanghai route on the horizon.
Gong Picai, Vice General Manager of Wuhan Branch of China Eastern Airlines said "Flights from Wuhan to Guangzhou are mostly affected. Airline passenger volume has dropped by 20 percent. And before the railway, flights to Shanghai witnessed an increase of 20 percent. But it is 20 percent less after the railway there was completed. That means 654 passengers fewer everyday."
To compete with railways and minimize their losses, air carriers have take on many strategic shifts. For instance, increasing the number of regional flights and some carriers are also looking for international flights. At the same time, more and more high-speed railways are being operated to consolidate its advantages.
Liu Qiang, Wuhan Railway Administration said "Every day from seven o'clock in the morning to 8 o'clock in the evening, we have 88 pairs of trains fully prepared to cater for passengers. Take the May Day holiday for instance, passenger volume has increased by 50 percent year on year. And the minimum interval has been reduced to five minutes."
The competition, while giving customers more economic choices, will also promote the development of the two industries. One expert says they should each make the most of future opportunities.
Professor Ou Guoli, Beijing Jiaotong University said "Currently, I think high speed railways should be constructed between cities of higher economic development. For instance, between Beijing and Tianjin, Shanghai and Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. And airlines should focus on trips of more than 1000 kilometers, and the expanding international market."
Also, in his eyes, railways and airplanes are not necessarily opponents, they can also complement each other, which is one way of promoting the efficiency of transport.
