吴孟超:生命的救星

Wu Mengchao is the founder of hepatic surgery in China. He was the first surgeon in the country to successfully carry out liver cancer surgery. Wu has dedicated his entire career to fighting for his patients as they fight for their lives.
吴孟超是中国肝胆外科的奠基人。他是国家第一位成功进行肝癌手术的外科医生。吴孟超的整个职业生涯都致力于为他的病人、为他们的生命而奋斗。

Doctor Wu Mengchao has been blessed with the hands of God. That’s a familiar refrain made by other hepatic surgeons in China.
吴孟超医生被赋予了神之手。这是中国其他肝胆外科医生常说的话。

He has brought 14, 000 liver cancer patients back to life. And it’s in light of these achievements he’s been granted China’s top scientific award.
他挽回了1.4万名肝癌病人的生命。鉴于这些成就，他被授予中国最高科学奖。

One of his patients, Wang Tiantian, understands the man well.
他的一位病人王甜甜很了解这个人。

In 2004, Tiantian was diagnosed with liver cancer. Every doctor Tiantian visited said the location of the tumor meant it was too dangerous to remove. And the cost of a liver transplant, as plan B, was far beyond the economic capacity of the family. When Tiantian and her mother turned to Wu Mengchao, they had little hope.
2004年，王甜甜被诊断患上肝癌。甜甜看过的每位医生都称肿瘤的位置要移除太危险。而B计划，肝脏移植的费用远远超出她的家庭经济能力。当甜甜和她母亲向吴孟超求救时，她们几乎不抱希望。

Tiantian's mother said, "If my daughter can not survive, I would kill myself. I had even bought poison."
甜甜的母亲称：“如果我女儿活不了，我会自杀。我甚至买好了毒药。”

Wu Mengchao said, "A liver transplant was not the best choice. I knew the removal of the tumor would be highly challenging. But I thought of the girl, and I decided to do it."
吴孟超表示：“肝脏移植不是最好的选择。我知道移除肿瘤的挑战性很高。但是我想到这名女孩，我决定挑战。”

Many doubted his decision, as the failure of the surgery would have destroyed his prestige. But he cared very little about their opinions.
许多人质疑他的决定，因为手术的失败会使他身败名裂。但是他并没有在意他们的看法。

Wu Mengchao said, "Fame means nothing for a doctor. What matters to me is my patients’ welfare."
吴孟超称：“名声对一名医生来说是毫无意义。对我而言重要的是我的病人的健康。”

After 9 hours in the operating room, the 83-year-old doctor secured Tiantian’s life.
在手术室9个钟头之后，这位83岁的医生保住了甜甜的性命。

Wang Tiantian said, "He said to me: You’ll recover. That’s for sure. His hands were so warm and full of strength."
王甜甜表示：“他对我说：你会康复的。这是肯定的。他的手如此温暖，充满力量。”

For Wu Mengchao, nothing is more important than saving people’s lives. As a leader in his hospital, he has set rules to safeguard the wallets of patients. And sometimes, he can be very strict about this.
对吴孟超而言，没有什么比救人性命更重要。作为医院的领导，他制定了保护病人钱包的规定。有时，他对此非常严格。

Wu Mengchao said, "The relatives asked to have the expensive one." "That’s your problem as a doctor. You should have told them that they don’t have to."
吴孟超称：“病人亲属要求要最贵的。”“这是你作为一名医生的问题。你应该告诉他们他们无需这么做。”

Throughout his entire career, his patient-first attitude has been a breath of fresh air in an industry that is surely in need of one.
