England is sailing into the quarterfinal round of Euro 2012. A Wayne Rooney header and a close call were among the highlights as the Englishmen vanquished co-host Ukraine on Tuesday.

England in white, coming into the match with one win and one draw in group play. The Brits held 4 points and couldn't risk losing the match if they hoped to advance in Euro 2012.

Ukraine was in a must-win situation with one win and one loss for 3 points. Andriy Shevchenko couldn't play due to injury, but his absence didn't slow the Ukranians down. The co-host side held the possession advantage over England.

In the 22th minute, Ukraine's Oleh Gusyev tried a shot that went over the crossbar. Ukraine missed its first chance for the lead. England slowly rounded into shape with an attacking style spearheaded by Rooney. He was suspended for two matches but came back firing, Rooney was right in the middle of England's scoring chances.

In the 28th minute, Ashley Young delivered the ball to Rooney, but he couldn't get the header into the net.

Ukraine's Andriy Yarmolenko broke into the penalty area near the end of the first half, but England's Joleon Lescott foiled his scoring try. Ukraine dominated the first half statistics, but the teams went into the break 0-0.

In the 48th minute England made a move, Steven Gerrard's deflected right-wing cross got past the Ukraine goalkeeper and left Rooney with an easy header for 1-0. It's Rooney's first Euro championship goal in the eight years since he joined the national team.

Ukraine went for the equalizer, and almost got it at 62 minutes. Joe Hart stopped Marco Devic's try, and John Terry hacked the ball off the line. Ukraine's players thought the ball had crossed the line, but the fifth official ruled otherwise.

Heartbreak and disappointment for the Ukraine fans, it was still 1-0 England. That's how the match ended. England finishes at the top of the group, and heads into the knockout round at Euro 2012.
