世界母乳喂养周:提高中国母乳喂养意识

2012-08-07来源:CCTV9

August 1st to the 7th is international breastfeeding week. The World Health Organization recommends that women should attempt to breastfeed their babies up to the age of six months if they’re able to, with less frequent breastfeeding continuing to age two. Many hospitals in China have been promoting breastfeeding in recent years... and women in China now have more access to breastfeeding information than ever before. CCTV reporter Hu Chao went to one hospital to meet mothers and doctors.

In recent years, many women and children’s hospitals in China have started providing breastfeeding classes.

Chen Yongai gave birth just two days ago, here at the Haidian Mother and Child Hospital in Beijing. She says she’s found breastfeeding easy so far.

"I think breast feeding is safe and healthy, and it’s also economical. Because I had enough training before giving birth, so far I’ve not had any trouble breastfeeding. " Chen Yongai said.

Zhang Yanxia is an expectant mother. She says the hospital’s breastfeeding classes have changed her view of breastfeeding.

"I once thought that famous brands of milk powder were good enough to feed a baby. But after taking some lessons in hospital, now I know breast milk is the best for baby. There’s no better substitute for breast milk." Zhang Yanxia said.

Doctors keep telling mothers to stick to breastfeeding. But they say many new mothers often give up too easily.

Li Haimiao, Chief Physician of Haidian Mother & Child Hospital, said, "The benefits of breastfeeding need to be further emphasized among women in China. Breastfeeding training before delivery is vital. It greatly helps to save lots of problems after delivery. The government should provide more policies and more money to help promote breastfeeding."

Doctors also say society and local communities need more breastfeeding education and awareness, in order to encourage new mothers to continue breastfeeding when they return home.
