After a fallout with his coach earlier this year, China's Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang has hit the national headlines again for the wrong reasons. The pool prodigy was detained by police after driving without a license earlier this week in China’s eastern city of Hangzhou.

China’s Olympic champ is in hot water again.

Swimming star Sun Yan is serving a seven-day jail sentence for driving without a license, after a bus rear ended his vehicle in his home town of Hangzhou.

Sun was not hurt in the accident.

The four-time Olympic medallist was also fined 2000 Yuan, according to local police.

"Sun Yang was driving a white Porsche Cayenne SUV at the time. He was heading along this road when he came to an intersection. He was preparing to turn right, and slowed down to avoid pedestrians and was hit from behind by a route 900 bus." Hangzhou traffic police Zheng Xin said.

His latest trouble out of the pool also doesn’t seem to be the first time it’s happened.

A photo has surfaced showing the 21-year-old driving a sports car to an airport back in September.

Hoping to contain the negative fallout, Sun has apologized to his 20 million followers on his microblog, expressing strong regret for his actions in neglecting traffic laws.

In his apology, Sun said that as he was usually busy with training and competing so he had a weak knowledge of the law, which led to the mistake.

He also asked the public to give him a second chance, and promised not to repeat his mistake.

His fans expressed disappointment at their role model’s misconduct.

They agreed that being a world champion takes hard work, but said maintaining a good public image was also vital to a great career and that a single mistake can destroy it all.

The college where Sun trains with his swimming team has suspended him indefinitely, announcing that he’s been barred from practising and competing.

He has also been banned from doing any commercial activities until his suspension is lifted.
