June 1st is International Children’s Day, and many primary schools in China are throwing parties for students. According to a report from the All-China Women’s Federation, China now has more than 35 million children of migrant workers living in towns and cities, and the numbers are increasing yearly.

CCTV reporter Hu Chao went to a primary school for migrant children in Taiyuan, capital of north China’s Shanxi Province, to see how students there are celebrating their Children’s Day.

This is Pengcun Primary School in Taiyuan. The students are putting on shows to celebrate International Children’s Day.

"I think I dance very well! I thought I would be nervous but I wasn’t at all when I started to dance!" Wang Zhuoya, Student of Taiyuan Pengcun primary school said.

"I really feel happy on Children’s Day. I can see many shows and can also have fun with other kids." Liu Yujie, Student of Taiyuan Pengcun primary school said.

The school says it has about five hundred and eighty students, with nearly 97% of them being children of migrant workers. They came to the city with their parents from other counties in Shanxi or other provinces including Henan, Hebei, Anhui and Shaanxi.

Most migrant workers are too busy working in the city to spend quality time with their children. The school has been making efforts to enrich their life.

Many migrant children lack academic or emotional support from their families. So teachers organize weekly extracurricular activities that keep them in school and learning, instead of at home and alone. And the school has also set up a library especially for the migrant students.

But many teachers say most of the children of migrant workers are very independent.

"I’m proud of their independence. Although their parents are often not at home, they’re quite considerate and often help take care of their little sisters and brothers." Li Shuhong, Vice Principal of Taiyuan Pengcun primary school said.

In recent years, many organizations have provided various forms of support to the school. Some college students have also volunteered to help teach the children.
