What could children do if they wanted to go to school, but the family could not afford the tuition? A possible solution is the Monastic Phaung Daw Oo school. CCTV reporter Xu Zhaoqun talks to a student who found his way there. It’s easy to find monks who speak English well in the temple on top of Mandalay Hill. Practicing English with the tourists has become a priority for Thomas, who now practices every afternoon. Even though dressed as a monk, Thomas is just a student, and tries to share his experiences in school with tourists. In Phaung Daw Oo’s crowded classroom, Thomas and his classmates learn from the same curriculum as other schools. The difference is that many of the students here are from the poor families in the remote ethnic areas. Some are simply orphans. Thomas said his parents don’t have to pay for tuition. Thomas’ fellow classmates range from 5 to 18 years old. It’s really had to keep something like that runningly smoothly. Some students choose to work for the school after graduation. Nancy is the one of them, who’s very proud of her experience in the school. Thomas said he may become a teacher, just like his teachers. But he also seems to have even bigger wishes. Thomas refused to talk about the details of his future plan. But he said he will make an effort to practice English with tourists. He is grateful for the school that brought him the chance, and he wants to make full use of the chances.
