The penultimate round of the Chinese Super League picked out the top two teams against each other on Sunday. Marcello Lippi's Guangzhou Evergrande played at home against second-placed Beijing Guoan. Guangzhou, six points ahead of Guoan, needed a point to secure its fourth straight title.
Guoan had to beat the mighty host to save its title hopes to the final round. Guoan pressed hard from the start of the match. In the 15th minute, Darko Matic threatened with a powerful shot, but Chinese international Zeng Cheng was on hand to push it over the bar.
Evergrande had a chance to open the scoring ahead in the 19th minute. Elkeson blasted the ball over the crossbar. The Brazilian striker had scored a league record 27 goals so far this campaign.
After 35 minutes, Evergrande’s Rene got on the loose ball for a thunderbolt. The ball sailed toward the goals but hit the woodwork. It was 0-0 at half-time.
Guoan was helped six minutes after the interval. Sun Xiang pulled down Pablo Batalla. The Evergrande left back was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the match. The home side was reduced to ten men.
Guoan finally broke the deadlock two minutes from time. Shao Jiayi curled in a brilliant free-kick, leaving Evergrande with almost no time to fight back. The visiting team celebrated the goal as if they had won the championship trophy. Guoan held on to the 1-0 victory and kept its title hopes alive.
Evergrande is still on top despite the defeat; Guoan is three points behind. Evergrande boast a goal difference of 23 goals and leaves Guoan with only theoretical hopes of winning the title. Guangzhou R&F thrashed Harbin Yiteng 5-1 and sealed an AFC Champions League spot for next season.
