The chairman of the Lenovo Group says his company's acquisition of Motorola's mobile business puts the computer maker in a position to diversify and expand its revenues and finally overcome expensive patent obstacles.

China-based Lenovo will take over the Motorola brand and Motorola's portfolio of mobile businesses in the 2.9 billion U.S. dollar finalized on Thursday. Lenovo expects to sell more than 100 million mobile devices this year, including smartphones and tablets, now that it's become the world's third-largest mobile phone manufacturer because of the deal.

"We had only one core business in the past, that is the personal computer business," Lenovo Group's Chairman & CEO Yang Yuanqing. "But with the purchase of Motorola's mobile business, the potential for our revenue will be diversified and become larger."

Google will maintain ownership of a majority of the Motorola Mobility patent portfolio but Lenovo, already the world's third largest personal computer manufacturer, can freely use the patents and other intellectual properties.

"The license of the patents are very important for us. In the past, our mobile phone products were charged heavy patent fees in the U.S. and EU markets that exhausted our sales profits," Yang said. "But now with the license to these patents, the obstacle of patent barriers is totally lifted."

Lenovo will run Motorola as a wholly owned subsidiary. Motorola's headquarters will remain in Chicago. Now that the acquisition has been completed, nearly 3,500 employees worldwide, including about 2,800 in the U.S., will join Lenovo.
