数千名移民试图通过海底隧道进入英国
Hundreds of migrants have stormed in an effort to reach Britain from France. It has forced the two countries to cooperate to find a long-term resolution to the worrying humanitarian issue on the continent.
Migrants have been trying night after night to rush the railway tunnel, which is a passage into the United Kingdom. They are mainly from Africa and the Middle East, as regional conflicts are forcing more and more people to flee their homelands.
In their latest attempt Wednesday evening, a Sudanese man in his late 20s died. Police said the victim was hit by a truck as it was leaving the cross-Channel ferry. He is the ninth migrant to be killed in the crisis since early June. They know it is dangerous, but they feel it is their only hope.
France has deployed more than 100 riot police to the port of Calais to bolster its security.
Meanwhile, Britain has said it is erecting a three-meter fence to protect the terminal.
And the government has agreed to an extra US$11 million of funding for measures to improve security at Calais.
The scale of the crisis has been highlighted in recent weeks by the sight of migrants lining roads and scrambling to jump into moving vehicles.
Eurotunnel officials said more than 37,000 such attempts by migrants had been blocked since January.
