突破! 张国伟男子跳高摘得银牌
Before the closing ceremony -- the final day of competition needed to be completed. And one of the last chances for China to add to their medal haul would come from Zhang Guowei in the men's high jump.
Zhang would be challenged by Olympic bronze medallist Derek Drouin of Canada. London Olympic silver medallist Erik Kynard, and defending champion Bohdan Bondarenko.
Only the home favourite Zhang, Bondarenko and Drouin could clear 2.33 meters. But all three men fail to clear 2.36.
The bar is lowered to 2.34 and the Drouin holds his nerve to clear the height to claim the gold -- Canada's second of the event . Zhang Guowei and Ukraine's Bondarenko share the silver.
China's Lyu takes silver with new Asian record
Another two Chinese athletes Lyu Huihui and Li Lingwei competed in the women's javelin finale. Li takes the lead on her first attempt, chucking it 64.10 meters.
Lyu would best that mark with a throw of 66.13 meters on her fifth attempt -- setting a new Asian record.
Germany's Kathrina Molitor would beat that with a massive 67.69 meter effort to claim the title. Lyu takes the silver, and bronze goes to South African Sunette Vilijoen.
Ethiopian favorite G. Dibaba settles for bronze
There is an Ethiopian clean sweep in the women's 5000 meters final but not in the expected order, as favourite Genzebe Dibaba is completely outpaced by compatriot Almaz Ayana who claims gold in a championships record time of 14 minutes, 26.83 seconds. Dibaba has to settle for bronze after being beaten by Senbera Teferi.
Kenyan wins third successive world title in distance
Kenyan Asbel Kiprop claims his third successive 1500 meters gold after a five-man sprint finish. Algerian Taoufik Makhloufi leads on the last bend but Kiprop eases to the front and accelerates away to win. Elijah Motonei Manangoi of Kenya is second, with Morocco's Abdalaati Iguider third.
USA finish second, Great Britain third
In women's 4x400 meters. Jamaica lead by some distance until individual 400 meters champion Allyson Felix propells favourites USA into the lead at the final changeover. But in the last 50 meters, Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills powers through to take gold in a time of 3 minutes, 19.13 seconds. Great Britain take the bronze.
Sixth straight world title in event for America
The Americans make amends in the men's 4x400 meters. Jamaica lead coming into the final straight but the experienced LaShawn Merritt anchors the USA to the title in a time of two minutes, 57.82 seconds. This is the Americans sixth successive world title in the event. Britain's men claim the bronze by just four-thousandths of a ahead of Jamaica.
After the final day of the competition, Kenya finish on top with 7 golds and 16 medals total. Jamaica are second, ahead of the United States, but the Americans had more overall medals. Hosts China finish 11th with 9 medals.
