伊拉克难民在难民营庆祝开斋节
One of Islam's holiest holidays has been celebrated worldwide by millions over the last couple of days, the Feast of Sacrifice known as Eid Al-Adha. It’s traditionally a time to bring the family together. But for millions of refugees, especially those fleeing the ongoing war in Syria – it was a completely different experience this year. Our correspondent Michal Bardavid takes a look at how the holiday was spent within a refugee camp.
This is the Arbad camp for refugees in Sulaymaniyah Iraq. 1600 people live within these tents at the moment. Though it is a time for celebration for Muslims due to the Eid Al-Adha– the Feast of Sacrifice… the atmosphere here resembles no festival.
Families who usually cook a large meal for the extended family – wait in line, patiently to receive their share of meat. Arriving in trucks, charity organizations have wrapped red meat in plastic bags.
Despite the conditions, families here are striving to hold on to their faith. Hamdia is a mother of 10 children. She reminisces of life before the war.
One other tradition is to hand out cash to children on the morning of the holiday… there were no gifts or money to be received – yet children seemed joyful nonetheless. Some riding on make-shift swings… others dancing and singing blissfully.
In this camp – though life continues to be a struggle, during the Feast of Sacrifice - most families are grateful for what they have.
