Besides those perished on the way, some are stranded halfway. Border controls applied by some countries are leaving them nowhere to go.
Stranded in no-mans land. Pushed out of Croatia, but not yet able to cross the next border. A line of riot police stands between the refugees and Slovenia. People are allowed in but in limited numbers.
When buses arrive, which is not very often, people are picked out of the crowd
Families are given priority. After that it's a lottery, and not everyone gets a ticket. Some people have been here days already and they're getting frustrated.
"They are feeling upset actually. Everyone is angry everyone is upset about what's going on here. It's not organised now. Unfortunately it's not organised. Because of that it's taking too much time," A Syrian refugee Hassam said.
Those who are not selected will spend the night here. Another tent camp, on another border. It's becoming a very familiar scene.

In the end Hassam did get through. These and the lucky ones moving on with their journeys. But with European policy on migrants continuing to change by the day, it's not clear how much further they'll get.
