恐怖袭击后 美国反穆斯林事件增加

Following the mass shooting attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, anti-Muslim incidents have surged, spreading fear among Muslim refugees seeking asylum in the U.S., and putting on edge America's own Muslim community. But even as Islamophobia becomes more rampant, Americans are also banding together to show support for the Muslim community.

For 16 years, Sarker Haque has run this food store in one of New York's most diverse neighborhoods in Astoria, Queens. Then in early December, he was suddenly attacked by a man he describes as a white American. Haque's experience is not an isolated one.

City Line, Brooklyn, is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the borough. But in the wake of the Paris attacks and anti-Muslim statements from U.S. presidential contenders, its residents have been on edge.

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the number of anti-Muslim attacks in the U.S. has hit a record high, worse than after the 9/11 attacks.

But there has also been growing support for the Muslim community, including from U.S. President Barack Obama, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

Ranim Alzuhaili is a Syrian refugee seeking asylum in North Bergen, New Jersey, who says she is deeply touched by how helpful Americans have been, including the customs officer who handled her case when she arrived in the U.S., without proper documentation.

Ranim's account is a stark contrast to Sarker's, but Jahanger Kabir says that in this climate of anti-Muslim sentiment, it is important to show all sides of the story.
