China's first Charity Law goes into effect today. The groundbreaking law ensures tight supervision on the management of charity groups, and strict regulations to prevent fraud.
Charity organizations must be recognized by authorities before they are allowed to solicit public donations. Those that do so without a license may face fines of up to 20,000 yuan.
And in a bid to better prevent Internet fraud, online charities are required to disseminate information through websites and platforms approved by civil affairs authorities.
There are also tax benefits in place to encourage more enterprises and wealthy people to donate to charity projects.
