He is in rather a hole.
The performance was rather a failure.
She’s rather a dear.
She found her new sales job to be quite a challenge.
The old map is quite a curiosity.
We had quite a job finding your house.
It was rather a busy day. = It was a rather busy day.
It’s rather a sad story.= It’s a rather sad story.
That’s rather a silly question.= That’s a rather silly question.
He seems quite a hopeful pupil. = He seems a quite hopeful pupil.
There was quite a respectable crowd at the match on Saturday.= There was a quite respectable crowd at the match on Saturday.
He is rather a fool.
He is a rather fool.(因为名词前无形容词,所以错误)
It’s quite the worst play I have ever seen.
He’s going quite the wrong way.
That’s not quite the colour I wanted.
Children’s shoes aren’t cheap—quite the reverse.
That’s rather the impression I wanted to give.
the rather slippery subject of race relations
