half与冠词之间的位置关系

1. 在通常情况下，不定冠词位于half之后，如说 half an hour，half an apple 等，不过在美国英语中也可将不定冠词置于half 之前，如说 a half hour, a half apple 等。值得注意的是，在以下情况，必须说 a half，不能说 half a：

① 当构成复合词时：a half-hour test 半小时的测试

② 当half 不表示“一半”时：a half brother 同父异母或同母异父的兄弟

③ 当表示“几个半”时：two and a half weeks / two weeks and a half 两周半

2. 当我们谈论某一特定的一半，可以将定冠词置于half之前（此时的定冠词表特指）。如：

Would you like the big half or the small half? 你愿意要一大半，还是要一小半?

在这种情况下，若其后修饰有名词，名词前必须用介词of。如：

I didn’t like the second half of the film. 我不喜欢电影的后半部分。

A pint is the half of a quart, and there’s four quarts to the gallon. 一品脱等于半夸脱，四夸脱等于一加仑。

当half与其他词构成复合形容词并修饰名词时，此时修饰名词的定冠词必须置于整个“形容词+名词”结构之前。如：

She turned away from the half-open window. 她把脸从半掩的窗户移开了。

类似下面句子中的half-hours, half-light已相当于名词，定冠词自然应置于其前：

The clock strikes the hours but not the half-hours. 这个钟是正点打点而不是半小时打点。

I first met them in the half-light of an early dawn. 我第一次遇见他们是在黎明蒙蒙亮的时候。
