1. 是cows, bulls, oxen等的总称，虽为单数形式，但总表示复数意义；若用作主语，谓语要用复数；可受many修饰，但不能用much修饰。如：

Many cattle are suffering from a disease called BSE. 许多牛得了疯牛病。

Cattle are raised for meat, milk, and leather. 养牛是为了获取牛肉、牛奶和牛皮。

2.要表示“牛”的头数，可借助 head（单复数同形）。如：

twelve head of cattle 12 头牛

50 head of cattle 50 头牛

当所表示的数量为十、百、千时，通常可省略其中的head of。如：

thirty (head of) cattle 30 头牛

100 (head of) cattle 100 头牛

3. a herd of cattle与a head of cattle 不同，前者指“一群牛”，后者指“一头牛”。
