  Languages:

  Mother tongue 母语

  Mandarin 普通话

  Cantonese 粤语

Acquire a second language/ language acquisition 二语习得

  1. What foreign languages have you studied?

Talking about the foreign languages I’ve learnt, I’d like to mention Japanese and English.

Speaking of the reasons why I would like to learn Japanese, it is all about cartoons. I was really fascinated by the cartoons of Miyazaki Hayao when I was a senior high student, such as totoro, spirited away and Howls Moving Castle. I learned Japanese simply because of my interest in Japanese cartoons. When it comes to English, I learnt it because I need to communicate with my foreign friends.

  2. Would you say it’s difficult language to learn?

Talking about Japanese, I don’t think it’s a difficult language to learn because it bears much resemblance with my mother tongue Chinese. Lots of characters are the same. So I can easily understand the meaning. As for English, it’s a little bit difficult for me cuz I am not used to the pronunciation of words.

  3. Do Chinese people have many chances to practice oral English?

Yes, I think so. As you can see, training schools are springing up in a faster pace than years before. Students can take all kinds of English courses there. As a result, it is quite easy for them to find a compatible partner for practicing English. Also, there are now many TV programs which are broadcasted in English. Many people like watching them and imitating English people talking.

  4. Do you think it is important to know more than one language?

Yes. Knowing another language helps you understand people of other cultures better. Because of the increasingly close relationship between people from different countries, we are communicating with other countries in a much more frequent rate than before. Knowing more than one language can also give people a great edge in job hunting. As you know, many foreign enterprises require their employees to know at least languages of 2 countries.

  5. What is the most difficult part about studying a foreign language?

Grammar rules are hard to remember especially when the two languages have a huge gap between them. But the most important of all is determination, though it has nothing to do with the language itself, it really is the thing that decides how fast you are going to learn that language.
