Snigdha Nandipati has won the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
The 14-year-old eighth grader from San Diego, California, who finished second in last year's bee, won the 85th edition of the classic event by correctly spelling the French word that means ambush. Nandipat took home the $30,000 winner's purse, plus a $2,500 U.S. savings bond, a $5,000 scholarship and other awards.
Her grandparents traveled from India to attend the event, which was held at a resort outside Washington.
