UEFA Euro 2008 tournament: Switzerland beats Portugal 2-0

(BEIJING, June 16) -- Switzerland, a co-host country of the UEFA Euro 2008, defeated Portugal 2-0 in a Group A match at St. Jakob Park in Basel on June 15, 2008.

As the match could not change Switzerland's embarrassing position at the bottom of the group, it was regarded as a match to restore pride for the co-host country. This they accomplished with a victory over Group A table-toppers Portugal.

After a goalless first half, Hakan Yakin scored the opening goal in the second half for Switzerland. In the 83rd minute, he shot in a penalty and gave his team a 2-0 lead. As the Portuguese could not find the net before the whistle blew, the match ended 2-0 in favor of the Swiss.
