Conversation 1

A:I thought Big Ben was a grisly bear when I heard the name for the first time.

B:Oh, that's funny. Really  it's  one  of London's  best-known  tourist  landmarks.

A:Yes, now I know it's the name of the huge clock tower at the House of Parliament.

B:Oh,no, it's not. Most people think Big Ben is the House of Parliament's clock tower, but actually it refers  to the bell hung inside the clock tower.

A:Big Ben is the name of a big bell!

B:That's right!  It weighs over thirteen tons.

A:Thirteen tons!  That's amazing. Why was it called Ben rather than Blake or  Bruce?

B:It got its nickname from Sir Benjamin Hall, who supervised its casting.

A:I see. When was Big Ben made?

B:In 1850s,at a foundry in east London.

A:So Big Ben is more than one hundred years old. Does it still work today?

B:Yes. It strikes every hour on the hour with great accuracy.

A:Has it ever stopped ringing?

B:Yes. It stopped a few times for various reasons, but the chimes resumed ringing again over London.

A:It must have a great sound!

B:Yes. When there were air raids over London during the World War II,the chimes  of  Big  Ben  brought  people  comfort and hope.

A:Oh,so Big Ben must be much loved by the British people.

B:Not only the British people but people of various countries too. Now visitors from all over the world come to  see it and hear its chimes.
