W: I have something very unpleasant to talk over with you, John.
M: Do you mean the quality of the instruments you mentioned in your cable of Sep, 5th?
W: Yes, the case is too serious to be overlooked, so I decided to have a face-to-face talk with you. The instruments we ordered arrived here last week. After reinspection, we found 20 of them were terribly rusty. Here are the on-the-spot records and photos.
M: I regret this incident happened. Would you however, take such following factors into account, as stowage on board, weather effects, storage in the warehouse, etc.? I guess dampness at sea might be the cause of the rust.
W: Before unloading, our surveyors went on board and found the holds all in sound condition. It's evident that the rust is due to poor workmanship. It should be admitted that the rust was not scoured off completely before electroplating. As a result, the chrome coating would certainly not hold. You can see it from the photos.
M: Have you any idea about the settlement?
W: I demand a refusal of the full amount for the goods. We are in urgent need of the instruments. With so many faulty instruments in hand, our project will surely be delayed.
M: We will try our best to make up for the loss. I’ll cable our home office and ask them to dispatch the replacements. You can rest assured that your project won't be delayed.
W: Good.
M: As for the faulty instruments, I'd like to have them returned for examination.
