Unit 2. Part 4. Talking on the phone.
Dialogue 1.
W: Mr. Green’s office. May I help you?
M: Yes. My name is John Smith. And I’d like to speak to Mr. Green, please.
W: One moment please. I’ll put you through.
M: Thanks.
Dialogue 2.
M: Hello?
W: Hello. Can I speak to Mr. Smith, please?
M: I am sorry, he is not here. Can I take a message?
W: Yes, please tell him that Mary called. It’s urgent.
Dialogue 3.
W: Operator. Can I help?
M: I am calling from a pay phone in west highlight. I’ve been trying to get through to a number for the past 15 minutes. But I keep getting a funny noise.
W: Are you sure it’s the right number, sir?
M: Yes, I have checked in the telephone book. Are the lines overloaded?
W: What kind of sound are you getting?
M: A continuous Bee Bing sound. And I can’t get a right dialing tone.
W: Ah, that explains it then. We’ve been having trouble with your area because of crossed lines. One moment and I’ll try and get the number for you.
Dialogue 4.
W: Hello. I’d like to speak to Mr. Wang.
M: What number are you calling?
W: I’d like to speak to Mr. Wang at 2345145.
M: Sorry, there is no one here by that name.
W: Oh, sorry for troubling you.
Dialogue 5.
W: Hello, overseas operator. May I help you sir?
M: Yes, I am going to call LA sometime next week and I’d like to find out the time difference and charges.
W: The time difference between LA and Beijing is 16 hours. The charges vary according to the types of calls you make. The cheapest is a station to station call, then a person to person call, the mini charge will apply for the first 3 minutes, then each additional minute will be charged.
M: Will you quote the charge?
W: Yes, if you notify the operator when you place a call.
