下面我们要讲的一个习惯用语是形容那种专门会挑别人毛病的人。这个常用语就是:Nitpicker. Nitpicker实际上是由两个字组成的。Nit虱子下的蛋,picker就是挑东西的人。A nitpicker就是一个专门因为一些不重要的小事而批评别人的人,也就是挑剔,吹毛求疵。这种人一般都不受欢迎。Nitpicker这个字使我们想起一个在笼子里的猴子,把所有的时间都用来抓虱子。我们来举一个例子。这是一个新闻机构的编辑在对一个记者说话。他说他并不想挑剔,但是他对这位记者的报导有些批评。他说:
例句3: I hate to sound like a nitpicker, but I found a comma missing in your third paragraph and another comma missing down in the tenth paragraph. Let's try to be more careful from now on.
这个编辑说:我很讨厌听起来好像是在挑剔。但是我发现你文章的第三段里少了一个逗号,在第十段里也少了一个逗号。以后小心点。
