what is slang?

Slang is a particular kind of colloquial language. It refers to words and expressions which are extremely informal. Slang helps to make speech vivid, colorful and interesting but it can easily be used inappropriately. Althougth slang is mainly used in speech, it is also often found in the popular press.

Characteristics of Slang

it can be risky for someone who is not native speaker to use slang.
cops -- pigs
He's gone / wasted -- He's pissed / arseholed
jerk -- dickhead

Slang words change very quickly
1940s: wizard
1960s: fab, groovy
1970s: ace, cosmic
1980s: brill, wicked
1990s: cool, hip
Now: da bomb, phat

Most of the slang words usually have a limited usage
dude -- fellas
411 -- clue
dough -- loot
sprogs

Excessive usage of slang might be harmful
